Cooperation with civil society

According to the CPE mandate, the Romanian Embassy in Baku is conducting an intense activity for promoting Euro-Atlantic values and of the partnership of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the North-Atlantic Alliance in order to deepen bilateral cooperation and to facilitate a better understanding of NATO's policies within the civil society and public opinion of Azerbaijan.

In the framework of the public diplomacy activity, the Romanian Embassy is being involved in the co-organization or sponsoring of various public diplomacy activities in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Azerbaijan (MFA) and NATO Public Diplomacy Division (PDD) and various non-governmental organizations from Azerbaijan. By unfolding conferences, seminars, round tables and providing lectures various NATO topics within different universities from Baku and Ganja, there has been developed a good cooperation with many civil society organizations from Azerbaijan. It could be mentioned in this respect the activities organized in cooperation with:

  • • NATO International School from Azerbaijan (NISA),
  • • Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan,
  • •  Organization of Integration of Azerbaijani Youth to Europe (AGAT),
  • • The Euro-Atlantic Centre from Baku,
  • • The Institute for Cooperation with NATO from Azerbaijan,
  • • The Euro-Atlantic Inform Center from Ganja,
  • • Azerbaijani branch of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATAA),
  • • Eurasian Association of Lawyers,
  • • Lawyers Confederation from Azerbaijan,
  • • National Committee for European Integration of Azerbaijan,
  • • The Public Association for Security and Defence from Azerbaijan (public Coalition consisting of 20 NGOs), etc.

During the 2009-2016 years, the Romanian Embassy in Baku, in its capacity of NATO CPE, has provided also information and offered several sets of NATO publications, books and CD/DVDs to different NGOs and universities from Baku and Ganja. 

Sets of materials  were offered  to Foreign Languages University, Western University, Qafqaz University and Ganja State University from Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, sets of informative materials has been distributed to the journalists participating in the Workshops, organized together with the Euro-Atlantic Centre of Baku and Military Researches Center of Journalists from Azerbaijan. 

By organizing each year  information visits of the opinion formers (academics, NGOs representatives and journalists) from Azerbaijan to the Headquarters of the Alliance the level of the expertise on NATO within the civil society of Azerbaijan increased.

The Romanian Embassy uses every opportunity to inform the Azerbaijanian officials and representatives of related non-governmental organizations about the new information and promotional materials on NATO available at CPE, as well as about the most interesting and updated information and documentaries available on NATO TV channel and on NATO website. The electronic NATO CPE Newsletter is compiled monthly and is widely distributed in Azerbaijan. 

The unfolded NATO public diplomacy activities have been reflected regularlly by local media, including the speeches and statements delivered by the Ambassador of Romania, as well by other NATO speakers taking actively part in various public diplomacy NATO events in Azerbaijan.
